LOS ANGELES – LMU women's water polo closed out the weekend with a true road test, facing the top team in the nation on Sunday. The top-ranked Cardinal defeated the #17-ranked Lions, 21-9.
Stanford earned an opening-possession penalty shot to take a 1-0 lead.
Kelsey Snelgar tied the game at 1-1 at the 5:58 mark with an even-strength goal. The Cardinal responded with the next three goals before
Mollie Williams ended the quarter with her first of the day to cut the deficit to 4-2.
The home team extended their lead to 7-2 before Williams got one goal back for the Lions. After Stanford built an 8-3 lead,
Alexandra Akritidou scored consecutive goals to bring the Lions back within three. Stanford took a 9-5 lead into intermission.
The first four goals of the half went to the Cardinal before
Mei Vilanova scored for LMU. Stanford ended the period with a goal to push ahead 14-6 entering the final eight minutes.
LMU's fourth quarter featured goals from
Marialena Seletopoulou, Snelgar, and Akritidou as Stanford was able to build their lead up to double-digits.
The Lions split time in goal between
Elizabeth Bradley and
Madison Davis. Each goalkeeper played 16 minutes and recorded three saves.
LMU closes out their road trip on Thursday with a return to conference play. The Lions will travel to Riverside to face California Baptist for a 6:00 PM game. The final two games of the regular season will be played at home beginning with Fresno State on Saturday morning at 11:00 AM.
