LOS ANGELES– The Loyola Marymount University softball team (30-14) defeated the Santa Clara Broncos, 4-2, to sweep their second straight WCC series, improving to 8-1 in the conference.
The Lions got off to a solid start Sunday morning, as lead-off batter
Sydney Poole hit a double to start the game in the bottom of the first inning, which would end in no runs.
In the top of the second inning,
Alyssa Daniell bombed a solo homerun to right field, giving the Lions an early 1-0 lead.
The Lions would return in the bottom of the third inning making more noise, as
Megan Dedrick hit an RBI single through the right side, allowing
Sydney Poole to cross home plate, increasing the lead to 2-0.
On the defensive end, the Lions held the Tigers to no hits, no runs through the first five innings of the game.
In the bottom of the fifth inning,
Morgan DeBord hit an RBI sacrifice fly out to right field, bringing in
Andrea Gonzalez to score followed by an RBI single through right center field by
Georgia Blair.
Headed into the top of the sixth inning, the Lions were up 4-0 before the Tigers responded with a 2 RBI single to right center field to decrease the deficit, 4-2.
The Lions finished the game with seven total hits to the Tigers, one hit.
Sydney Poole went 3 for 3 at the plate, hitting a triple, doble and scoring two runs for LMU. Alyssa Daniell went 2 for 3 at the plate, nailing her fifth home run this season.
Jenna Perez moves to 14-6 as she pitched 7.0 innings, one hit and two runs, while producing 12 strikeouts.
The Lions will travel to San Diego, Calif. for a three-game WCC series starting with a double header on Saturday, Apr. 30 at 12:00 p.m. PST, followed by game two at 2:00 p.m. PST. They will then play game three on Sunday, May 1 at 12:00 p.m. PST.
