MORAGA– The Loyola Marymount University softball team (27-13) completed the sweep against the Saint Mary's Gaels, 10-2, Saturday afternoon to improve to 5-1 in the West Coast Conference standings.
In the top of the first inning,
Morgan DeBord would assist the Lions with their first run of the game as she hit an RBI sacrifice fly to center field, bringing in
Sydney Poole.
Later in the same inning,
Alyssa Daniell would hit a pop fly to the shortstop, causing a fielding error that would allow
Megan Dedrick to score to increase the lead to, 2-0.
The Lions were able to hold the Gaels to just one hit in the first four innings, as they continued to perform well offensively.
In the top of the fourth inning,
Peyton Angulo would hit an RBI home run over the right center field wall to expand the lead to, 4-0.
With bases loaded in the top of the fifth inning, the Lions would score again as
Jasmine Sofowora would give LMU their fifth run of the game off a walked batter.
The Gaels did respond in the fifth inning, scoring two runs off three hits to bring the lead down to a three-run game, 5-2.
However,
Val Pero would return the favor in the top of the sixth inning, darting an RBI single through right center field, bringing in Dedrick for her second scored run of the game. In the same inning, Daniell hit a two RBI double down right field line, making the point-spread larger than before with a 8-2 lead.
The Lions were not done yet, as
Andrea Gonzalez would nail an RBI triple to right center field, to bring in Angulo for the Lions ninth run of the game. This score was followed by pinch hitter
Madison Askins getting her second RBI of the weekend in her career with a sacrifice fly out to bring Gonzalez home from third base.
The Lions finished the game with ten total hits to the Gaels, four hits.
Peyton Angulo went 2 for 3 at the plate, hitting her fifth home run of the season, while compiling 3 RBIs and two runs.
Alyssa Daniell went 3 for 4 at the plate, finishing with 2 RBIs and one scored run.
Jessica Hubbard moves to 6-0 on the season, pitching 5.0 innings while allowing four hits and two runs, producing 2 strikeouts.
Jenna Perez and
Paulina Johnson both pitched an inning a piece, allowing no hits and no runs.
The Lions will return home to Smith Field for a non-conference match with Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday, Apr. 19 at 5:00 p.m. PST.
