Lions Clinch Series With Dominating Offensive Day

MORAGA– The Loyola Marymount University softball team (25-13) swept the Saint Mary's Gaels in a double header on Friday afternoon, winning game one 5-1, while exploding on the Gaels in game two, 14-0 in five innings.
 
In the first inning of game 1, the Lions were behind after the Gaels got off to a decent start by scoring the first run of the game off an RBI double in the bottom of the inning.
 
With the Lions behind 1-0 in the top of the second inning, Alyssa Daniell an RBI fly out to center field, allowing Georgia Blair to score LMU's first run which tied the game, 1-1.
 
The remaining of the game was all Lions as they would continue to hold the Gaels to just one run. In the bottom of the fourth inning, LMU extended the lead with Daniell nailing another RBI as she hit a single down right field line, bringing in speedy pinch runner Madalie Gomez.
 
In the same inning, Andrea Gonzalez hit a grounder to the shortstop, advancing Daniell home to increase the lead, 3-1.
 
Headed into the top of the fifth inning, the Lions still held the 3-1 lead over the Gaels, as Georgia Blair hit an RBI single to right field to bring in Sydney Poole for LMU's fourth run.
 
As the Gaels were not able to respond, the Lions would continue their performance in the top of the sixth inning to seal the deal, as Gonzalez hit an RBI double down left field line to advance Jasmine Sofowora, as the Lions came away with the victory, 5-1.
 
The Lions finished the game with ten total hits to the Gaels, three hits. Georgia Blair finished 3 for 3 at the plate, while producing an RBI and a run. Jasmine Sofowora also went 3 for 3 at the plate, scoring one of the five runs for the Lions. Alyssa Daniell went 1 for 2 at the plate, nailing two RBIs while scoring one run.  
 
Jenna Perez moves to 12-6 on the season, pitching 7.0 innings while allowing three hits and one run, producing six strikeouts.
 
In Game 2, the Lions performed their best game of the season yet, exploding on the Gaels in five innings of action-packed softball.
 
The Lions got right to business in the top of the first inning with Morgan DeBord darting an RBI single to left field to bring in Megan Dedrick. This run was followed up with Georgia Blair hitting a 2 RBI homerun over the right field fence, giving the Lions an early 3-0 lead.
 
The Lions held the Gaels to just one hit in the first three innings, as they continued to showcase why there are the best in the conference in the top of the third inning with Blair and Angulo hitting RBI singles to give the Lions a 5-0 lead.
 
In the top of the fourth inning, the Lions would really separate the score in this WCC match scoring eight total runs in the inning.
 
Megan Dedrick and Morgan DeBord started off the top of the fourth inning with RBI singles, followed by Dedrick scoring off a wild pitch for a quick three runs.
 
In the same inning, Blair and Angulo would both hit RBI doubles through the outfield bringing in runners to continue the fourth inning blowout.
 
Standout freshman would complete the inning with a 3 RBI home run bomb to center field, giving the Lions a 13-0 advantage over the Gaels.
 
Saint Mary's was not able to respond in the inning, as the Lions would come right back in the top of the fifth inning as Freshman Madison Askins hit a solo home run for her first career homerun as a Lions.

The Lions finished the game at the plate with fifteen total hits, compared to the Gaels, two hits. Georgia Blair finished 3 for 4 at the plate, hitting her seventh home run this season, while also producing four RBIs and two runs. Jasmine Sofowora hit her third career homerun, finishing 1 for 3 at the plate while producing 3 RBIs and scoring one run. Sydney Poole went 3 for 3 at the plate, scoring two runs for the Lions

Savannah Hooks moves to 4-4 on the season, pitching 4.0 innings while allowing only two hits and no runs. Logam Caymol finished the game for the Lions pitching 1.0 innings, allowing no hits, no runs.
 
Game 2 marked the second WCC series win for the Lions in the 2022 season, as they look to sweep the Gaels in Game 3 tomorrow at Cottrell Field. The first pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. PST.
