LOS ANGELES– The Loyola Marymount University softball team (13-10) defeated the Princeton Tigers, 10-3, in game 1 and then sealed the sweep with another win, 12-4, to improve to 15-10 on the season.
In the bottom of the first inning,
Val Pero brought the energy back from yesterday, hitting a 2 RBI home run to give the Lions the first runs of the game.
The Tigers did respond in the top of the second inning, scoring their only three runs with two singles and one double to give them the lead, 3-2, over the Lions.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Lions would get ahead, as
Alyssa Daniell hit a 3 RBI homerun, followed by
Sydney Poole scoring a run on a wild pitch.
The Lions played excellent defense throughout the remaining of the game, holding the Tigers to no runs and just two more hits.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Lions were able to load the bases and take advantage of the pitcher, scoring four more runs on walks and two wild pitches.
The Lions would hold the Tigers in the seventh inning to complete the game with the win.
The Lions finished the game with seven total hits to the Tigers, five hits.
Val Pero went 1-3 at the plate, nailing a homerun, 3 RBIs and one run.
Georgia Blair finished 2-4 at the plate, scoring one run.
Alyssa Daniell hit another homerun on the season, going 1-2 at the plate, finishing with 2 runs and 3 RBIs.
Paulina Johsnon moves to 4-2, pitching 3.0 innings while allowing four hits and one run.
Savannah Hooks got the save, pitching 3.0 innings as she allowed no hits and no runs.
Jessica Hubbard got the start, pitching 1.0 innings, allowing one hit and two runs.
In Game 2 the Lions and Tigers both got off on a great start. The Tigers hit two solo home runs to give them the early 2-0 lead over the Lions.
However, the Lions would respond immediately, scoring five runs.
Sydney Poole nailed the first run for the Lions on a passed ball.
Arianna Jaurequi would then hit an RBI single up the middle, allowing
Andrea Gonzalez to score.
In the same inning,
Georgia Blair would bomb a 2 RBI double to left center field, giving the Lions a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
With the inning still in play,
Jasmine Sofowora would hit an RBI single to bring in Blair for the Lions fifth run of the inning.
In the bottom of the second inning with the score, 5-2,
Sydney Poole would hit her first home run on the season, darting the ball to center field.
The bottom of the third was all Lions, as they were able to hold the Tigers to no runs no hits in two straight innings.
Sofowora kicked things off for the Lions, hitting an RBI single to right field, allowing
Megan Dedrick to score. Poole continued her great game with an RBI single to down third base line to make the score, 7-2.
Andrea Gonzalez would force a sacrifice bunt to bring in Sofowora, followed by an RBI Triple down right field line. DeBord would then score on a wild pitch, as the Lions increased the lead, 11-2.
The Tigers were able to get another run on the board in the top of the fourth inning to decrease the lead to, 11-3.
The Lions couldn't hold the Tigers off in the top of the fifth inning to confirm the eight-run mercy rule, as they were able to score off a sacrifice fly out to center field.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Lions were able to complete the eight-run mercy rule, as
Megan Dedrick hit a walk-off ground-rule double to complete the game, 12-4.
Savanah Hooks is now 3-4 this season, as she pitched 6.0 innings, allowing seven hits and four runs.
The Lions will travel to Westwood, Calif. tomorrow to face the Penn Quakers on UCLA's softball field, with the first pitch set for 4:30 p.m. PST
