Box Score 2 LOS ANGELES– The Loyola Marymount University softball team (11-10) swept the Utah Utes in a double header, going eight innings with the Utah Utes softball team in game 1, defeating them, 8-7, and coming back in game 2, 3-2, to improve to 13-10 on the season.
The Lions started off great at the plate, as
Val Pero bombed an RBI double to centerfield, allowing
Morgan DeBord to score in the bottom of the first inning.
Arianna Jaurequi would then hit an RBI triple in the same inning, bringing in
Val Pero to make the score, 2-0.
Headed into the third inning, 2-0, the Utes were able to respond by scoring a runoff a single, and then hitting a 2 RBI homerun to take the lead, 3-2.
The Lions would respond in the bottom of the third inning, scoring off a fly out to center field to tie the game.
The Utes would go on to score four more runs in the fourth and fifth innings which gave them a 7-3 advantage over the Lions.
The Lions did not give up and were able to fight back in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Pero nailed a solo home run to decrease the Utes lead.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Lions would continue their comeback as
Taylor Keinath hit an RBI double to left center field, making the score, 7-5. Later in the inning, DeBord would hit a 2 RBI line-drive single up the middle to tie the game for the Lions.
Jenna Perez would come in to pitch for
Jessica Hubbard, to close out the game for the Lions, holding the Lions off for the top of innings seven and eight.
Sydney Poole would hit a grounder to shortstop, allowing
Megan Dedrick to slide at home from third to win the game for the Lions, 8-7.
The Lions finished the game with fourteen total hits to the Utes, thirteen hits.
Val Pero went 2-3 at the plate with 2 RBIs and two runs.
Morgan DeBord finished 3-4 at the plate, collecting 2 RBIs off 3 hits, while scoring two runs.
Arianna Jaurequi finished 2-2 at the plate, recording two hits and one RBI.
Jenna Perez moves to 4-3, pitching 2.0 innings while allowing one hit and no runs.
Savannah Hooks started the game, pitching 2.2 innings as she allowed five hits and three runs.
Paulina Johnson also pitched 1.1 innings, allowing five hits and three runs.
Jessica Hubbard pitched 2.0 innings, allowing two hits and one run.
In Game 2 the Utes and Lions were in a fight as they both put up runs in the first inning.
The Utes scored the first two runs of the game off a 2 RBI double to right center field in the top of the first inning.
However, the Lions were able to respond aggressively in the bottom of the inning, as
Morgan DeBord hit an RBI triple to center field, which brought in
Andrea Gonzalez to decrease the lead.
The next five innings would be all defense as the Lions and Utes would not allow any runs to come across home plate.
The Lions would change the game completely coming back in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Debord would hit an RBI double to center field to tie the game.
Pero would seal the deal for the Lions, hitting a fly out to right field, allowing
Sydney Poole to score the game winning run.
The Lions finished the game at the plate with eight total hits, compared to the Utes four hits.
Morgan DeBord went 2-4 at the plate, recording 2 RBIs and two hits.
Georgia Blair went 2-3 at the plate
Jenna Perez is now 5-3 this season, as she pitched 7.0 innings, allowing only four hits and two runs.
The Lions will continue their home stand tomorrow with another double header, as they will face the Princeton Tigers at Smith Field, with the first pitch set for 12:00 p.m. PST
