Lions Wrap Up San Diego Crew Classic

Results

SAN DIEGO, CA – The Loyola Marymount Men's and Women's Rowing teams traveled down to Mission Bay, Calif. to compete at the annual San Diego Crew Classic this past weekend. The two-day regatta attracted teams from all over the country, many of them nationally ranked. The highly regarded spring regatta proved to be a great opportunity of racing for the Lions.

The Lion women took their Varsity 8+, Second Varsity 8+, and Novice 8+ boats to compete in their first set of 2000-meter races of the season. While the Lion men, who have a couple 2000-meter races under their belt, took their Varsity 8+ and Novice 8+ boats.

DAY ONE: Saturday Mar. 26th

Day one of racing at San Diego Crew Classic kicked off with the Women's Varsity 8+ competing in the second heat of the Women's Collegiate Varsity UCSD Health Cup event at 11:35 AM. In the heat were two WCC competitors, Gonzaga and Portland. The Lions had a tough battle against Portland. The Lions pulled through to a 5th place position with a time of 7:25.586, just three tenths of a second faster than the Portland Pilots (7:25.894), advancing the Lions to the Petite Final.

The Men's Varsity 8+ was up next in the third heat of the Men's Varsity Active&Fit Now Cal/Copley Cup Eight. The lions earned a 5th place finish with a time of 6:52.527, advancing them to the C Final.

Up next was the Women's Novice 8+ competing for the Women's Collegiate Novice Laurel Korholz Perpetual Trophy. As the boat was filled with all true novices, each rower raced their first 2000-meter race of their rowing careers in this heat. With a time of 8:15.684, the Lions placed 6th. The event had only enough entries to compete in the first heat, so all boats advanced to the Grand Final.

The Men's Novice 8+ raced directly after in the Men's Collegiate Novice Derek Guelker Memorial Cup event. The Novice Men were faced with teams they had lost two the weekend prior but were able to push through their previous results. The Lions came in the 2nd with a time of 7:11.966, twenty-one seconds behind Orange Coast College (6:50.264) and just over three seconds faster than the third-place position, UC Santa Barbara.

The Women's Second Varsity 8+ was the last race of the day for the Lions. The lions were initially set to race after the Men's Varsity 8+ heats, but due to boat breakage from another crew, the start time was pushed back to 3:36 PM. Despite the rattling start, the Lions were able to throw it down. As the heat's eighth place seed, LMU was able to secure the 6th place spot in their heat with a time of 7:01.900, thirty seconds behind the Texas Longhorns, the winners of the heat and the 2021 NCAA Champions. Sending them to the Petite Final for the Women's Collegiate 2V Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy and concluded the first day of racing.

DAY TWO: Sunday Mar. 27th

The second day of racing for the LMU Rowing teams started earlier in the day at 9:45 AM with the Women's Varsity 8+ competing in the Petite Final of the Women's Collegiate Varsity UCSD Health Cal Cup event. This was a close race with all boats holding contact for the entire 2000-meter stretch. The lions had another tough battle against Portland, going bow ball to bow ball for second place all throughout the race. The crew finished with a time of 7:07.398 falling short to Portland (7:06.692) by only five tenths of a second, resulting in a 3rdplace position in the Petite Final and 10th overall.

The Men's Varsity 8+ saw a similar finish in the Men's Collegiate Varsity Active&Fit Cal Cup Petite Final. The Lions had four boats in their race and placed 3rd in the final and 9th overall with a time of 6:36.278. The lions were just over three second behind the first-place finishers, UC Davis Aggies (6:32.777), and thirteen seconds faster than the Colorado Buffs (6:49.357).

The Women's Second Varsity 8+ was the next LMU crew to race. The Women's Collegiate 2V Jackie Ann Stitts Hungness Trophy Petite Final was another close race for all boats racing. The Lions held a second-place position within through the 1000 meter mark. LMU crossed the finish line at 7:18.507 and in 4th place. The crew was two seconds behind the first and third place finishing teams; UC San Diego Tritons (7:16.052), USD Toreros (7:16.209), and the Sacramento State Hornets (7:16.237) respectively.

The Women's Novice 8+ raced in the Women's Collegiate Novice Laurel Korholz Perpetual Trophy Grand Final. The Lions saw a similar result as the previous day. LMU crossed the finish line in 6th with a time of 8:16.928.

The Men's Novice 8+ was the final race of the weekend for the Lions. The crew raced with high hopes in the Grand Final for the Men's Collegiate Novice Derek Guelker Memorial Cup. The lions finished just four-tenths of a second behind the University of Calgary (7:07.845). The crew earned a 5th place overall finish with a time of 7:08.235, concluding the Lions time at the 2022 San Diego Crew Classic Regatta.
