SAN DIEGO, CA – The Loyola Marymount Men's and Women's Rowing teams traveled down to Mission Bay, Calif. to compete at the annual San Diego Crew Classic this past weekend. The two-day regatta attracted teams from all over the country, many of them nationally ranked. The highly regarded spring regatta proved to be a great opportunity of racing for the Lions.
The Lion women took their Varsity 8+, Second Varsity 8+, and Novice 8+ boats to compete in their first set of 2000-meter races of the season. While the Lion men, who have a couple 2000-meter races under their belt, took their Varsity 8+ and Novice 8+ boats.
DAY ONE: Saturday Mar. 26th
Day one of racing at San Diego Crew Classic kicked off with the Women's Varsity 8+ competing in the second heat of the Women's Collegiate Varsity UCSD Health Cup event at 11:35 AM. In the heat were two WCC competitors, Gonzaga and Portland. The Lions had a tough battle against Portland. The Lions pulled through to a 5
th place position with a time of 7:25.586, just three tenths of a second faster than the Portland Pilots (7:25.894), advancing the Lions to the Petite Final.
The Men's Varsity 8+ was up next in the third heat of the Men's Varsity Active&Fit Now Cal/Copley Cup Eight. The lions earned a 5
th place finish with a time of 6:52.527, advancing them to the C Final.
Up next was the Women's Novice 8+ competing for the Women's Collegiate Novice Laurel Korholz Perpetual Trophy. As the boat was filled with all true novices, each rower raced their first 2000-meter race of their rowing careers in this heat. With a time of 8:15.684, the Lions placed 6
th. The event had only enough entries to compete in the first heat, so all boats advanced to the Grand Final.
The Men's Novice 8+ raced directly after in the Men's Collegiate Novice Derek Guelker Memorial Cup event. The Novice Men were faced with teams they had lost two the weekend prior but were able to push through their previous results. The Lions came in the 2
nd with a time of 7:11.966, twenty-one seconds behind Orange Coast College (6:50.264) and just over three seconds faster than the third-place position, UC Santa Barbara.
The Women's Second Varsity 8+ was the last race of the day for the Lions. The lions were initially set to race after the Men's Varsity 8+ heats, but due to boat breakage from another crew, the start time was pushed back to 3:36 PM. Despite the rattling start, the Lions were able to throw it down. As the heat's eighth place seed, LMU was able to secure the 6
th place spot in their heat with a time of 7:01.900, thirty seconds behind the Texas Longhorns, the winners of the heat and the 2021 NCAA Champions. Sending them to the Petite Final for the Women's Collegiate 2V Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy and concluded the first day of racing.
DAY TWO: Sunday Mar. 27th
The second day of racing for the LMU Rowing teams started earlier in the day at 9:45 AM with the Women's Varsity 8+ competing in the Petite Final of the Women's Collegiate Varsity UCSD Health Cal Cup event. This was a close race with all boats holding contact for the entire 2000-meter stretch. The lions had another tough battle against Portland, going bow ball to bow ball for second place all throughout the race. The crew finished with a time of 7:07.398 falling short to Portland (7:06.692) by only five tenths of a second, resulting in a 3
rdplace position in the Petite Final and 10
th overall.
The Men's Varsity 8+ saw a similar finish in the Men's Collegiate Varsity Active&Fit Cal Cup Petite Final. The Lions had four boats in their race and placed 3
rd in the final and 9
th overall with a time of 6:36.278. The lions were just over three second behind the first-place finishers, UC Davis Aggies (6:32.777), and thirteen seconds faster than the Colorado Buffs (6:49.357).
The Women's Second Varsity 8+ was the next LMU crew to race. The Women's Collegiate 2V Jackie Ann Stitts Hungness Trophy Petite Final was another close race for all boats racing. The Lions held a second-place position within through the 1000 meter mark. LMU crossed the finish line at 7:18.507 and in 4
th place. The crew was two seconds behind the first and third place finishing teams; UC San Diego Tritons (7:16.052), USD Toreros (7:16.209), and the Sacramento State Hornets (7:16.237) respectively.
The Women's Novice 8+ raced in the Women's Collegiate Novice Laurel Korholz Perpetual Trophy Grand Final. The Lions saw a similar result as the previous day. LMU crossed the finish line in 6
th with a time of 8:16.928.
The Men's Novice 8+ was the final race of the weekend for the Lions. The crew raced with high hopes in the Grand Final for the Men's Collegiate Novice Derek Guelker Memorial Cup. The lions finished just four-tenths of a second behind the University of Calgary (7:07.845). The crew earned a 5
th place overall finish with a time of 7:08.235, concluding the Lions time at the 2022 San Diego Crew Classic Regatta.

After the eventful weekend, the both the Loyola Marymount Men's and Women's Rowing teams will be returning to the Marina to compete on their home water of Marina Del Rey on Saturday April 2
nd at 8:00 AM. The Men will be going against the University of Southern California Trojans in the Marina Del Rey Channel, while the Women will be racing the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos in the Ballona Creek.
Follow the morning racing, LMU Rowing holding a boat christening with alumni, family, and friends at the Jane Bove Browne Boathouse. The chancellor of the university, Father Michael Engh, will be christening the new boat in honor of his late brother and former member of the LMU Men's Rowing team, Steve Engh ('74).
