LOS ANGELES, CA – The Loyola Marymount University Lions (6-13-1, 3-0 WCC) went back and forth with the UCLA Bruins on Tuesday night but a seventh inning surge by the visitors was the difference in the 9-5 setback.
The Lions gave the ball to
Jacob Fried for his first start of the season and the sophomore was one of four pitchers used for the midweek game. Fried was solid in the first inning, giving up an opening single but retired the next three batters he faced.
The Lions, trailing by two, got right back in the game off the bat of
Jared Thomas when he sent a fly ball deep into the night for a two-run shot. Thomas for the game went 3-for-5 with the homer, a pair of singles, two RBIs, and scored a run.
LMU surged ahead in the home half of the fourth, scoring a pair of runs but in the top of the fifth UCLA tied the game with a two-run home run.
The visiting half of the seventh proved to be the difference as UCLA scored five runs in the frame. The Lions got one back in the eighth off of
Grant Weiss' second home run of the season but it wasn't enough on Tuesday night.
The Lions return to West Coast Conference play this weekend when they travel to Santa Clara for a three-game set with the Broncos. The Lions and Broncos will start the series on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. followed by Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and the Sunday finale at 12:00 p.m.
