LOS ANGELES, CA – The Loyola Marymount University Lions (3-12-1, 0-0 WCC) got home runs from
Devan Ornelas and
Diego Baqueiro but it wasn't enough in the 7-4 setback against the Cal St. Northridge Matadors.
LMU got on the board in a hurry when Ornelas delivered a 1-1 offering over the right field wall for his first homer of the season. On the night he went 2-for-4 with two hits, one run, and one RBI.
The Lions increased their lead in the home half of the third when
Benny Casillas singled to left scoring
Cole Roberts giving LMU a 2-0 lead.
The fourth inning proved to be the difference as the Matadors brought in four runs to take the lead 4-2.
Trailing by three heading into the bottom of the seventh LMU got another home run off the bat of Baqueiro. The team leader in homers with five sent the second pitch he saw deep over the left field wall cutting the lead to one.
The Matadors put two runs up in the top of the eighth while LMU had their chances but couldn't produce runs in the home half of the eighth and ninth.
The Lions now focus on West Coast Conference play when Saint Mary's pays a visit to Page Stadium. The three-game series is set to start Friday, March 18 with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
