Lions Tenacious Defense Leads To Sweep Over Roadrunners

LOS ANGELES– The Loyola Marymount University softball team (16-10) swept the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners, 4-2, in game 1 and then sealed the sweep with another win, 7-0, to improve to 18-10 on the season.  

Game 1 between the Lions and Roadrunners was dead tight in the first four innings, as no one was able to get a run across the plate just a few hits on both sides.

In the bottom of the fifth inning of game 1, Andrea Gonzalez hit an RBI single to center field to advance Alyssa Daniell to score the first run of the game.
 
This would boost the momentum for LMU, allowing Morgan DeBord to collect another RBI on the season, bringing in Sydney Poole to increase the lead, 2-0.
 
In the same inning, Val Pero would force a sacrifice fly out to centerfield which caused a fielding error on the Roadrunners, as Gonzalez was able to score again for the Lions.
 
The Tigers did respond in the top of the sixth inning, scoring on a 2 RBI home run to cut the lead down to, 3-2.  
 
However, Georgia Blair would come right back in the bottom of the sixth inning, bombing a solo home run to center field.
 
The Lions were able to hold the Roadrunners off in the top of the seventh inning to complete the game.
 
The Lions finished the game with seven total hits to the Tigers, six hits. Andrea Gonzalez finished 2-4 at the plate, scoring one run while compiling one RBI. Sydney Poole wnet 2-4 at the plate as well, scoring one run. Georgia Blair bombed her second home run on the season, while going 1-3 at the plate, compiling one RBI.

Jessica Hubbard moves to 3-0, pitching 4.1 innings while allowing four hits and no runs.  Savannah Hooks her second save this season, pitching 2.2 innings as she allowed two hits and two runs.  
 
Game 2 was all LMU, as they played phenomenal defense the entire game.
 
In the bottom of the second inning, Peyton Angulo drove a 2 RBI home run t over the right field wall, giving the Lions an early, 2-0, lead.
 
In the same inning, Sydney Poole would hit a single up the middle, allowing Megan Dedrick to score the Lions third run of the game.
 
After holding the Roadrunners to no hits, no runs in the first three innings, the Lions would come back to the plate to continue their excellent hitting performance.
 
In the bottom of the third inning, Blair would hit a sacrifice fly out, allowing Morgan DeBord to score another run for the Lions to increase the lead, 4-0.

In the same inning, after the Lions were able to get full bases, Megan Dedrick would drive a 2 RBI single up the middle bringing in Jasmine Sofowora and Val Pero.
 
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Pero hit another single down left field line, allowing Alyssa Daniell to score the Lions final run.The Roadrunners were not able to score at all in game 2.
 
The Lions finished the game with eight total hits to the Roadrunners, one hit. Val Pero finished 2-4 at the plate, compiling one run and one RBI. Peyton Angulo finished 2-2 at the plate, nailing her third home run this season. Megan Dedrick went 1-2 at the plate, scoring one run, while netting 2 RBIs.

Jenna Perez is now 5-3 this season, as she pitched 6.0 innings, allowing one hit and no runs. Logan Caymol pitched 1.0 inning, allowing no hits and no runs.
 
The Lions will return to Smith Field tomorrow to face the Columbia Lions on Smith Field, with the first pitch set for 2:00 p.m. PST
