Box Score 4 LOS ANGELES – LMU Women's Water Polo won both games on Friday to open the LMU Invitational. The #18 Lions topped #19 Princeton, 13-9, in the morning game before taking down Cal State East Bay, 15-7, in the second match.
GAME 1: #18 LMU 13, #19 Princeton 9
The Lions needed to mount a comeback after falling behind 2-0 in the first quarter. Maddy Galt scored in the closing seconds to put the Lions on the board.
Marialena Seletopoulou tied the game less than a minute into the second quarter with her first of a game-high five goals. After Princeton went back on top, Seletopoulou responded with two goals in a row to give the Lions a 4-3 lead. The Tigers answered with the next two goals, before
Alena Sanchez tied the game at 5-all.
Ruth Arino Ruiz gave LMU a halftime lead with her go-ahead goal with 11 seconds to play until halftime.
Princeton took the lead back with two goals less than a minute apart in the third quarter. LMU then responded with the final three to close out the period.
Alexandra Akritidou tied the game with 3:23 on the clock then Arino Ruiz and Seletopoulou scored a goal apiece.
The lead grew to 10-7 as Sanchez scored early in the fourth quarter. The Tigers cut it back down to a two-goal deficit before
Yanah Gerber, Seletopoulou, and Arino Ruiz rattled off three consecutive goals. Princeton added one late to make it a 13-9 final.
Madison Davis played all 32 minutes in the cage and made six saves.
GAME 2: #18 LMU 15, Cal State East Bay 7
After allowing the first goal,
Alena Sanchez and
Yanah Gerber scored to put the Lions on top, 2-1. The Pioneers tied the game at 2-0, before
Ruth Arino Ruiz scored two consecutive goals to close out the quarter and push LMU ahead, 4-2.
The Lions opened with the first three goals of the third quarter as
Alena Sanchez,
Ruth Arino Ruiz, and
Marialena Seletopoulou all scored. East Bay got one back, to make it 6-3 at the half.
Gerber,
Kelsey Snelgar, and Seletopoulou scored the first three goals of the third quarter to extend the lead to 10-3. The Pioneers added one back before Arino Ruiz closed out the period pushing the Lions ahead 11-4.
Gerber scored her third of the day to open the fourth.
Tara DeBrabander added her first goal of the tournament with 4:17 to play.
Risse Sanchez scored two goals within a minute to close out the scoring for the Lions.
Madison Davis made 12 saves and added a steal in the win.
