LOS ANGELES – LMU men's basketball returns home for a Thursday night national broadcast against BYU. The two teams will battle it out from Gersten Pavilion beginning at 8:00 PM on ESPNU.
Over 20 games into the 2021-22 seasons and this is the first meeting between the two programs this season. The West Coast Conference schedule has the two playing again in a few weeks on Feb. 26 in Provo, Utah.
Both programs are looking to change the course of their teams after dropping the last few games each. LMU will try to end a five-game slide after winning back-to-back home conference games on Jan. 15 and 17 over Portland and Pepperdine, respectively. The Cougars have lost four in a row and haven't won on the road since Jan. 15.
LMU last beat BYU on Feb. 1, 2018 behind then-freshman
Eli Scott's 19 point, 10 rebound double-double. Now in his fifth-year, Scott was the only current player to play in that game and help the Lions earn their seven-point home win/
Entering the week, BYU has grabbed more rebounds than any other Division I program this season. The Cougars rank first in the country with 994 rebounds collected this season. Part of the reason why BYU averages nearly 40 boards a game is due to their WCC-leading 11.1 offensive rebounds per game combined with their conference-leading 29.3 percent three-point defense.
If LMU can counter with rebounding and high field goal percentage, that could prove to be an answer. Scott ranks sixth in the WCC at 6.9 rebounds per game and
Joe Quintana ranks first in the conference at 2.76 three-point field goals made per game.
In addition to the ESPNU broadcast, KXLU 88.9 will broadcast the audio of the game on radio.
