Lions Unable to Gain Traction in Game 2 Loss to Portland

Box Score PORTLAND – Loyola Marymount Women's Basketball team fell to West Coast Conference foe, University of Portland in game 2, 64-49.

The Lions came out strong, fighting off the press early and attacking the basket. Halfway through the first quarter score was tied, 8-8. The Lions were fouled 6 times in the quarter, shooting six for six, as they appeared at the free throw line three times.
 
On the other hand, turnovers kept the Pilots in the game, as the home team scored six points off the Lions' mistakes.
 
The score,13-10, at the end of the first quarter, was a display of great defense on both ends as the WCC match was exciting to see.
 
Khari Clark caught fire in the second quarter hitting two straight shots, leading the Lions with eight points. Alexis Mark also contributed, as she controlled the boards with six rebounds in the first half, while shooting two for three from the field with four points.
 
Up by two, The Pilots went on a 13-0 run hitting back-to-back threes from the perimeter, giving them a twelve-point cushion, 30-18, holding the Lions to just eight points in the second quarter.
 
As the Lions trailed heading into the third quarter, it was clear they were determined to bounce back from the early deficit.
 
Alexis Mark continued her shooting performance, going two for two early in the third quarter, making her four for five with eight points.
 
Ariel Johnson was able to attract fouls, shooting five for six from the free throw line, while Clark continued demanding the ball in the paint.
 
The Pilots capitalized on second chance points all game as they grabbed 13 offensive rebounds by the middle of the third quarter. The Lions fought back in the paint as Mark and Jones combined for a total 15 rebounds alone.
 
Headed into the fourth quarter with the score, 45-30, both teams shot below 35% from the field. Johnson would start to gain traction on offense, hitting two straight field goals and getting to the line.
 
The Pilots offense was too much for the Lions, as they gain a 20-point lead, 56-36, with six minutes remaining in the game.
 
The Lions allowed a total of 17 second chance points in the game, which overall was a key factor in the team falling behind.

Ariel Johnson finished the game with 15 points, 3 assists, while shooting 60% from the field and 90% from the free throw line. Khari Clark performed well also with 10 points and 7 rebounds. Alexis Mark finished with 10 rebounds, almost getting the double-double with 9 points.
 
The Lions are now 3-8 in the conference, and 8-12 overall.

The Lions will travel to University of San Diego on Thursday, Feb.10.  The conference game can be seen on the WCC Network, with tip-off from Jenny Craig Pavilion set for 6 pm.
