IRVINE, Calif. – #18 LMU women's water polo closed out the 2022 Barbara Kalbus Invitational with an 11-5 win over #21 San Diego State.
The Lions built up a 4-0 lead after the first quarter as
Mollie Williams,
Marialena Seletopoulou,
Ruth Arino Ruiz, and
Alena Sanchez all scored goals in the opening eight minutes. Sanchez added the fourth goal with no time remaining on the clock.
After the Aztecs earned one back to open the second period, Williams and Seletopoulou each found the back of the cage a second time to give the Lions a 6-1 halftime advantage.
The third quarter featured three more Lions scoring goals as
Yanah Gerber,
Mei Vilanova, and
Tara DeBrabander all added to LMU's lead. San Diego State scored twice in the last minute of play to bring the score to 9-3 after three.
SDSU cut their deficit to five twice in the final quarter, but each time LMU built the lead back up to six. Williams and Seletopoulou each converted their hat tricks with a goal each in the fourth.
Madison Davis recorded six saves with only five goals allowed to earn the win.
LMU closes out the tournament with two wins and two losses.
The Lions will be back at Burns Aquatic Center on Mar. 11-12 to host the annual LMU Invitational.
