LOS ANGELES – LMU women's water polo made their home season debut on Thursday night as the #18 Lions hosted #8 UC Irvine. The Anteaters scored all four goals in the first quarter to take an early lead before winning the game, 13-9.
After the early deficit,
Marialena Seletopoulou opened the second quarter with a goal to put LMU on the board.
Kelsey Snelgar and
Mollie Williams followed and brought the Lions within one with 5:17 on the clock. The Anteaters added one back, then Seletopoulou hit converted a penalty to bring the score to 5-4 with three minutes to play in the half. UCI closed out the period with the next two goals to take a 7-4 halftime lead.
Once again, it was Seletopoulou who scored to open the third quarter for the Lions. After UCI got one back, Seletopoulou added to her team-high five goals with the next two to bring the score to 9-7 heading into the fourth.
Snelgar's goal less than a minute into the fourth made it a 9-8 score line. The Anteaters scored the next two before
Alexandra Akritidou put an end to the run. UC Irvine closed out the game with the final two goals.
Madison Davis played the entire 32 minutes in the cage and made six saves in the match with an assist and a steal.
Seletopoulou shared game-high honors with six points with her five goals and assist.
The Lions will head to Irvine next weekend for UCI's annual tournament.
