LA JOLLA, Calif. – LMU women's water polo played their first day of the UCSD Triton Invitational on Saturday. The #20 Lions dropped the opener to #10 UC Davis, before taking down Pomona-Pitzer to close out the day.
GAME 1: #10 UC Davis 10, #20 LMU 4
The Aggies jumped out to a 2-0 lead before
Ruth Arino Ruiz cut the defifit in half. After UC Davis pulled back ahead by two Arino Ruiz scored with 4:23 to make it a 3-2 game.
The score line held until UC Davis scored the first three goals of the second quarter.
Marialena Seletopoulou scored for LMU to make it a 6-3 game at intermission.
The Aggies extended that lead to 8-3 before
Isabella Barajas added one back for the Lions.
UC Davis scored the lone two goals of the fourth quarter to take the game, 10-4.
GAME 2: #20 LMU 10, Pomona-Pitzer 6
Kelsey Snelgar and
Alena Sanchez opened the game with goals to give the Lions an early 2-0 advantage.
Marialena Seletopoulou added one more in the period to give the Lions a 3-1 lead after the opening eight minutes.
Seletopoulou also scored the first goal of the second quarter. After the Sagehens got one back,
Yanah Gerber and
Maddy Gault each scored their first goals of the day. Sanchez would add a second to make it a 7-4 game at intermission.
Each team only scored one goal in the third, with LMU's coming off the arm of Sanchez less than a minute in.
Gerber,
Mollie Williams, and
Tara DeBrabander opened the fourth quarter with goals to extend LMU's lead to 10-4 with 3:35 to play. Pomona-Pitzer added two goals late.
