LOS ANGELES – Both LMU and Portland enter Saturday night's games on opposite ends of one-point results. The Lions just battled with BYU on Thursday before falling in overtime and the Pilots went to the Hilltop and knocked off San Francisco on Tuesday. The two programs will meet for the second time this season on Saturday night at 7:00 PM.
The game at the Chiles Center will be a rematch of when the two programs met earlier in the season at Gersten Pavilion in Los Angeles. Five Lions scored in double-figures in the double-digit win back on Jan. 17 of this year. LMU held Portland to 34.0 percent (18-for-53) shooting from the floor and 13 percent (3-for-23) shooting from behind the arc to win, 70-58.
The win was the seventh consecutive for the Lions over the Pilots, with the streak beginning in the 2018 West Coast Conference tournament. This is a different Portland team than recent years, as the Pilots have won more conference games in 2021-22 than over the previous three seasons combined.
LMU is coming off one of the best team offensive performances of the season. The Lions made 35 field goals on 56.5 percent shooting in the overtime loss on Thursday to BYU, both season-highs. LMU came down to earth after opening the game shooting north of 70 percent over the first 20 minutes of action against the Cougars.
With each team entering the final five games of the regular season, this matchup may prove to have implications in the final seedings heading into the WCC Championships. LMU could sit even with Portland in the standings with a win, plus hold the head-to-head tiebreaker with a pair of wins.
The game will air on Bally West, ROOT Sports NW, NBC Sports California, and the WCC Network out of those regions. In addition to the television broadcasts, KXLU 88.9 will broadcast the audio of the game on radio.
