LOS ANGELES – The LMU men's basketball team held Cleveland State to 3-for-22 shooting (13.6 percent) from three to earn a 70-59 win on Sunday afternoon. The Lions were lifted by 15-point performances from
Michael Graham and
Cam Shelton.
Cam Shelton hit LMU's first field goal at 16:53 and put the Lions up one with his three.
Jalin Anderson scored back-to-back baskets for a personal 5-0 run and push the Lions from a one-possession game to up seven with 9:33 to play in the opening half.
A pair of threes from
Alex Merkviladze bookended a 14-3 run to push the lead to 19 points with 3:18 to play.
Michael Graham closed the half with three consecutive layups to give him 10 first half points.
LMU started the game 2-for-10 but turned it around to hit 11-of the final 20 shots of the half and head into the locker room with a 40-24 lead.
The lead grew to a game-high 20 points with 14:15 to play as
Keli Leaupepe hit a three and Merkviladze followed with a jumper.
Cleveland State went on a run of their own to cut it to a seven-point game with less than four to play.
On an offensive rebound, Shelton completed a three-point play from push LMU back up a dozen. Ahrens added a late three and the lead never dipped below double-digits again. Shelton grabbed seven or more rebounds for the third time over the last five games.
The two teams combined for 33 offensive rebounds, with LMU grabbing 17 and turning it into 27 second chance points. Graham added 11 rebounds, with six coming on the offensive glass, for his first double-double since opening night.
Leaupepe added nine points with seven rebounds, Ahrens, Anderson, and Merkviladze each scored eight points.
LMU led for over 37 minutes of game play and only trailed at 4-2 early in the game.
The Lions will close out the non-conference portion of the schedule with one final home game set for Wednesday night against Tulsa at Gersten Pavilion.
