LOS ANGELES – For the fourth time in program history and first time since 2012, LMU men's basketball has defeated a team by 50 points. The Lions swarmed Life Pacific, 99-49, to take the opening game of the season.
The win was a complete team effort. Fourteen Lions scored and the team shot 50 percent from the field. LMU's paint points were 50 compared to the eight that LPU scored. All 16 fast break points went in favor of the home team and LMU benefitted in 22 points off turnovers compared to just four for the Warriors.
The rebounding discrepancy was a key reason that the Lions were able to create separation. Both LMU big men corralled double digit rebounds with
Michael Graham going for a 14 point and 13 rebound double-double and
Rick Issanza grabbing 10 rebounds to go with his eight points.
In total, five Lions scored in double digits for the first time since January of last season when the Lions took down Portland on the road.
Keli Leaupepe and
Chance Stephens led the way offensively with 15 points apiece. Leauepe hit his final five shots after missing the game's opening jumper to finish 5-for-6 and perfect from three and the free throw line. Stephens hit a game-high five threes in his first collegiate game.
Justin Ahrens capped his night with 4-for-5 shooting from long distance for 14 points. Joining the double-digit scorers was
Alex Merkviladze who finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.
The Lions led by as many as 59 points in the second half. LMU used a 49-17 spurt in less than 15 minutes to open the second half to get to that point.
Competition continues at Gersten Pavilion as UC Riverside comes to the Bluff on Thursday night. The Highlanders are coming off a road defeat at Colorado, 82-66, to open their season.
