Lions Hang Tough Against No. 15 Cougars

LOS ANGELES – Madison Werner scored on a looping chip but the LMU women's soccer team fell to No. 15 BYU on Saturday night at Sullivan Field.

The Cougars scored first on a penalty awarded after a handball in the box.

In the second half, the Lions chances started to accumulate with bursts from Ellen Loncar and Madison Werner and keen passing from Makayla Demelo, Sarah Murphy and Amber McCorkle.

After winning a free kick in the defensive area in the 54th minute, the Lions put together a set-piece masterclass.

Alice Santen lined up and played a ball into the top of the 18-yard box. Madison Thomas won the header and flicked it to the back post. Werner ghosted around her defender and chipped the goalkeeper with a phenomenal left-footed finish that sent the Lion faithful into a frenzy.

Amanda Delgado continued to impress, recording eight saves and coming out to claim numerous crosses.

The Cougars would score a wonder strike in the 79th minute to claim a lead they would hold onto until the end of the match.

The Lions close out the season 3-8-6 overall.

Santen, the freshman center back from Sweden, played every minute of every game this season and led the team with three goals and an assist. Janessa Groves tied for the team lead with three goals.

Gabriella Marchal led the team with three assists and played the second most minutes.

Overall, the Lions will return all ten players that recorded points this season.
