LOS ANGELES – The No. 2 seed LMU Lions men's water polo team comfortably defeated the Concordia Eagles 20-8 on Friday morning in the opening round of the Western Water Polo Association Tournament.
The first period was all Lions, as they shut out the Eagles and took a commanding five-goal advantage. Carrasco opened the scoring at the 4:11 mark and the Lions would not come remotely close to surrendering that lead for the remainder of the game. Mitrovic,
Aden Mina, and
Bruno Salonikios all added goals as well as Carrasco's second.
Kade Margain would keep the momentum rolling at the 6:28 mark of the second period, before the Eagles battled back for a pair of their own. Mitrovic, Carrasco and
Rafael Salonikios struck back with five goals before the end of the period for a halftime score of 11-3.
From there, the Lions cruised to a 12-point victory. Joseph Cavazos opened the second half scoring, Mitrovic added his fourth, Augie Renezeder got in on the scoring,
Jonny Rimlinger added his name to the scoresheet and Bruno doubled his tally all in the third period.
The Lions continued the pressure in the fourth period with four more goals. Tom Aldridge notched his first score of the season with a little over a minute left in the period to put a little icing on the cake.
The Lions will face the No. 3 seed UCSD Tritons in a semifinal match on Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. (PT) for a shot at the WWPA Tournament Title. The Lions and Tritons met three times this season, with the Lions prevailing in triple overtime in La Jolla, Calif. on Sept. 21, the Tritons winning 14-8 in the Stanford tournament and the Lions winning the conference matchup 15-12 on Oct. 29.
