LOS ANGELES – LMU men's basketball (2-1) handed UC DavIs (2-1) their first loss of the season on Saturday night in front of the home crowd. The Lions led throughout to defeat the Aggies, 85-75.
LMU opened the game 11-0 with the first nine points coming off made three pointers.
Justin Ahrens hit the opening triple, following by three from
Cam Shelton, and capped off by three more from Ahrens.
Jalin Anderson drove to the hoop to push the lead to 11-0.
Chance Stephens his first of four threes to give LMU a 12-point lead at the 14:05 mark of the first half. The freshman finished with 12 points.
The Aggies cut the lead down to three in the half, but the Lions pushed it back up to a dozen, at 40-28, on a Shelton made three and a Merkviladze layup. LMU carried a nine-point lead into the half, going in ahead 40-31.
Coming out of the locker room,
Jalin Anderson knocked down a triple to push the lead back to 12. Seven of Anderson's 12 points came in the second half.
UC Davis cut their deficit to four points before LMU responded with a 9-3 run to get it back to double digits.
LMU's largest lead came at the 6:53 mark after
Alex Merkviladze buried a three and
Michael Graham finished an offensive rebound tip-dunk.
Shelton scored LMU's final seven points as part of his LMU career-high 24-point performance, to go along with six assists and six rebounds.
Keli Leaupepe finished with a 16-point and 12-rebound double-double, his first of the year.
The Lions matched a season-high with 13 made threes, as six different players knocked down a long ball.
The first road test of the year is next on the docket for the Lions. LMU will travel to Irvine to face UC Irvine on Tuesday night to continue this stretch against Big West Competition.
