LOS ANGELES – The regular season was extended by three extra periods on Thursday as #13 LMU and #6 Long Beach State needed sudden death to determine a winner. After the game was tied at 9-9 in regulation, both teams scored in the first overtime period before LBSU scored the lone goal in sudden death to win 10-9.
Â
The Beach scored the game's opening goal less than a minute into play.
Kade Margain equalized with a goal just before the midway point of the first. After LBSU jumped back on top,
Max Walsworth took advantage of the 6-on-5 to make it a 2-2 game. Again, The Beach took a one goal lead, and again LMU responded as
David Carrasco knocked in a penalty shot with 10 seconds on the clock.
Â
The second quarter started the same as Carrasco provided another response to Long Beach State's go-ahead goal. The visitors scored the next two to take their largest lead of the day, into intermission.
Â
Margain opened the second half with two goals to tie the score at 6-all with 3:18 to play in the third period. LBSU scored late to take a 7-6 advantage into the final period of regulation.
Â
LBSU regained a two-goal lead to open the fourth quarter, forcing the Lions to need a comeback to extend the game. LMU did not allow a goal in the final 6:45 of regulation and benefitted from goals from
Joseph Cavazos and
David Carrasco to force overtime.
Â
The Beach scored at the one-minute mark of the first overtime to take a brief lead, before
Aden Mina tied the score on the ensuing possession as LMU was playing a man-up.
Â
Neither team scored in the second overtime session, forcing a winner-take-all golden goal opportunity in the seventh period. With 1:21 showing on the clock in sudden death, Long Beach State scored a powerplay goal to end the game.
Â
Stelios Dalmaras made a season-high 16 saves in the 41 minutes he played in the cage. The goalkeeper added two steals.
Â
The focus of the team now goes to the WWPA Championships. LMU hosts the three-game event from Nov. 18-20 as all nine teams in the league will compete for an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Lions enter as the 2-seed and will open against Concordia Friday at 10:30 AM.
