BERKELEY, CA – The No. 11 Loyola Marymount University Lions (8-0-1) won their eighth straight, preserving the nation's longest unbeaten streak, when they scored the game-winning goal with less than ten minutes to play to win 1-0 against the California Golden Bears on Friday afternoon.
The Lions and Bears were in a defensive battle in the first half but when the second 45-minutes started and the game opened up LMU put 14 shots on Cal with
Narciso Cervantes scoring the game-winner in the 82nd minute.
Cervantes, the team-leader in goals scored with four, took a cross from
Steven Anderson at the corner of the box and slid his shot past the Bears keeper for the goal.
Leo Zulli began the attack for the Lions in what turned out to be the only goal scored in the game.
The Lions led the Bears in shots 18-7, shots on goal 3-2 and corners 10-1.
Jacob Jackson posted his third straight clean sheet, turning away the Bears at every turn and helped preserve the Lions lead late in the game, smothering an opportunity from Cal in the 88th minute.
The Lions return to the pitch on Saturday, October 2nd when they travel to Stockton and open West Coast Conference play against the Pacific Tigers with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
