Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Lions Win Ninth Straight with Four Set Victory Over Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – LMU took the match over Cal Poly in four sets for the second time in three days. The Lions (9-1) have won nine straight games after the first four weeks of the season with a 3-1 win over the Mustangs (2-9), 25-19, 25-27, 29-27, 25-23.

"We have grown a ton as a team in the last four weeks," said Head Coach Aaron Mansfield. "A huge reason we are 9-1 has to do with how committed our players have been to learning and being intentional every day on how they can improve. It's really fun to see how loose and free we are playing the game right now. It's a fun group to coach."

The Lions took a 4-1 lead to open the match, and never surrendered the advantage. LMU closed out the match with six of the final eight points to win and take the early lead.

After jumping ahead 10-5 and 16-11, Cal Poly tied the game at 16-all with five consecutive points. From that point, neither team took more than a one-point lead leading to a tie at 25-all before Cal Poly closed the set with two straight points.

The Mustangs held the largest lead of the third set, 16-13, but couldn't break away from the Lions. LMU held off a set point at 24-23 with a kill by Rose Booth to extend the game. The Lions would ultimately pull out the set with a closing kill by Emmelyn Walters at 29-27.

Despite falling behind 11-3 and 15-7, a run of nine consecutive points pushed the Lions into the lead at 16-15 and forced a Cal Poly timeout. The set would be tied six more times from that run until the clincher, when Booth ended it with a kill of a set from Isabella Bareford.

Audrey Klemp led the Lions with 12 kills. Bareford accounted for 39 of 46 assists and Mary Shroll recorded 22 of the team's 55 digs.

This ends the non-conference portion of the schedule with LMU opening WCC action next week at Santa Clara and San Francisco.
