LMU Takes Down (RV) Kansas in Four Sets to Close Out Tournament

WEST LAFAYETTE, IND. – LMU women's volleyball picked up their first win of the season on Saturday, knocking off Kansas in four sets. The Lions (1-1) won 25-17, 25-23, 23-25, 26-24 to spoil the Jayhawks' season debut.

"Our team was really locked in today against Kansas," said Head Coach Aaron Mansfield. "We learned some really valuable lessons from last night's match and we were able to make some changes that continue to shows how committed the team is to learning and adapting. Kansas is a very athletic and physical team and we played really good volleyball as a team to combat those things. We are looking forward to getting back to LMU and continuing to see how good we can get."

LMU built up 10-7 and 13-9 leads in the opening set, but it was a stretch of claiming nine of 11 points that extended the lead to 22-13. The Lions closed out the set on a Kari Geissburger kill, one of her match-high 20 kills.

The second set remained close throughout, with Kansas holding a three-point advantage twice early on in the set. The game went back-and-forth with each team having a shot to take the set. All tied at 23-all, LMU claimed the final two points to push ahead 2-0 in the match.

Despite the Lions building an 8-4 lead in the third set, Kansas responded out of their timeout and tied the score at 10-10. The Jayhawks pushed ahead 19-18 before LMU tied it one more time on a Megan Rice kill off one of Isabella Bareford's match-high 46 assists. The Lions ultimately fought off three set points before Kansas took the set.

Kansas took the early advantage in the fourth set, jumping ahead 8-3, 9-4, 11-5, and 13-8. The Lions then responded with nine of the next 10 points to take a 17-14 lead. The Jayhawks continued to battle and retook the lead at 21-20. LMU retook the lead with three straight points, but ultimately the game would be tied at 23-all and 24-all before the Lions closed out the match.
