LOS ANGELES – The Loyola Marymount University softball team split on its second day of play against BYU, dropping the series 2-1 after winning 3-2 in a walk-off, and then falling 9-1 at Smith Field on Saturday.
The Cougars put the first run of the day on the board in the top of the second inning. The Lions responded in the bottom of the second with two runs.
Morgan DeBord singled, and then advanced when
Allisha Martinez walked. Both then advanced on a wild pitch, and then scored off of a single from
Alyssa Daniell. The Lions took a 2-1 lead to end the second.
BYU tied things up in the top of the fourth. Neither team was able to score through the seventh, forcing extra innings, and it wasn't until the bottom of the 10
th inning the Lions made some noise.
Tied at 2-2,
Molly Grumbo singled, and then scored when
Andrea Gonzalez doubled, winning the game in a walk-off.
The Lions had seven total hits, while BYU had three. Gonzalez went 2-4 at the plate, while DeBord went 1-3. Grumbo led in putouts with nine.
Marina Vitalich picked up her 13
th win after pitching 10.0 strikeouts, allowing three hits and two runs. She had nine strikeouts.
Up 1-0 on the day and tied at 1-1 in the series, the Lions battled in the second game of the day, as the Cougars started off strong, scoring in the first inning.
The Lions responded in the bottom of the first, when
Taylor Keinath singled to first base, and then made it to third when Gonzalez doubled to center field. Keinath scored when Dedrick was out at first base to tie things up.
The Cougars then went on a run, scoring three runs in the third, one in the fourth and four in the sixth. With a 9-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth, the teams closed out the game due to a run-rule.
The Lions had one hit, while the Cougars had nine. Grumbo and Daniell had four putouts a piece.
Vitalich picked up the loss, after pitching 1.1 innings and allowing four hits and two runs.
Paulina Johnson pitched 0.1 innings, allowed three hits and two runs, while
Alessandra Samperio pitched 3.2 innings, allowing five hits and five runs.
Mallory Eckroth came in to close out the game, allowing one hit and zero runs.
The Lions are now 20-20 on the season and 8-4 in conference play. The Lions will not have any conference opponents next week, but will be looking towards Monday May 10
th when they host Team USA.
