STOCKTON – The Loyola Marymount University softball team split on its first day of play up in Stockton, Calif., as the team won its first game 5-1, and then dropped its second 4-0.
The Lions started game one off to a strong start. Pacific put the first run on the board in the bottom of the fourth, but the Lions quickly responded in the top of the fifth with a home run from
Alyssa Daniell.
Martinez scored after
Megan Dedrick reached on a fielding error.
The Lions continued the trend in the top of the seventh, as
Taylor Keinath scored off of a double from
Andrea Gonzalez, and then Gonzalez scored after a triple from Martinez.
The Tigers were not able to respond in the bottom of the seventh.
The Lions had seven total hits, compared to the Tigers' six. Gonzalez and Daniell both went 2-3 at the plate. DeBord led in stolen bases with two, while
Molly Grumbo led in putouts with seven.
Marina Vitalich pitched a complete seven innings, and allowed six hits and one run. She had seven total strikeouts.
Up 1-0 on the day, LMU had a tough second game. The Lions had six hits, but wasn't able to put a run on the board. The Tigers scored all four of their runs in the bottom of the third.
Paulina Johnson pitched 2.1 innings and picked up the loss, as she allowed three hits and four runs.
Alessandra Samperio pitched 3.2 innings and allowed one hit.
The Lions will be back on the field on Sunday to close out the series against the Tigers at noon.
