LOS ANGELES – A walk-off grand slam from
Morgan DeBord capped Saturday's softball game off for the Loyola Marymount University softball team, giving them their second win of the day over University of San Diego. The Lions beat the Toreros. 4-2 and 7-3.
The teams were quit to open up the series until the bottom of the fifth inning, when the Lions put four runs on the board.
Andrea Gonzalez made noise in the bottom of the fifth when she homered with
Megan Dedrick on base.
Alyssa Daniell then got on base, followed by
Taylor Keinath. Daniell scored after
Molly Grumbo grounded out, and then Keinth scored after
Desiree Moreno doubled.
The Lions left the fifth up 4-0. San Diego responded in the top of the seventh, but they were only able to put two runs on the board, giving the Lions a 4-2 win.
Daniell had a perfect 2-2 at the plate, while Gonzalez went 1-2. The Lions had four total hits, compared to San Diego's three.
Marina Vitalich picked up her ninth win of the season after pitching a complete game and only allowing two runs and three hits. She also had nine strikeouts.
Up 1-0 on the day, the Lions opened with a homerun in the bottom of the second from Dedrick. The Lions continued their momentum in the bottom of the third, after Moreno reached on a fielding error to send Gonzalez home.
USD responded in the top of the fifth with two runs to tie things up at 2-2, and then took the lead in the sixth, adding one more run.
Down 3-2, the Lions had a dominating seventh inning, starting with Gonzalez who scored after Moreno reached on a fielding error.
With bases loaded, with Moreno on first, Grumbo on second and Keinath on third,
Morgan DeBord hit the ball over the fence for a grand slam walk-off. This was the Lions first grand slam of the year. The Lions won game two 7-3.
The Lions had seven total hits, while USD had nine. Keinath went 2-3 at the plate. Moreno led in putouts with five. DeBord led in RBIs with four.
Alessandra Samperio pitched 4.1 innings and allowed six hits and two runs. She had. Two strikeouts.
Paulina Johnson picked up the win, pitching 2.2 innings, and allowing three hits and one run.
The Lions will be back on Smith Field on Sunday to conclude their series against USD. LMU currently leads 2-0.
