Santa Clara, Calif., -- The Loyola Marymount University softball team (13-17, 2-1) shut out Santa Clara University Sunday afternoon, 9-0, winning its first conference series of the season.
The Lions collected their seventh shutout of the season, and pitcher
Marina Vitalich's fifth.
LMU started off strong, putting three runs on the board in the top of the first, with
Desiree Moreno and
Molly Grumbo first to cross the plate, after
Allisha Martinez tripled, giving her two RBIs.
Morgan DeBord earned the third RBI of the inning after Martinez scored.
The Lions continued their momentum in the third, as Moreno homered with Grumbo on base, adding two more runs to take a 5-0 lead to close out the third inning.
Two more runs were added by the Lions in the top of the fifth, after
Megan Dedrick doubled, which sent Martinez and
Page Mindedahl, who came in to pinch run for Moreno, home.
The Lions closed out the top of the seventh with a triple from Dedrick, which gave DeBord a run. Dedrick then put the final run on the board after
Peyton Angulo singled, to close out the inning 7-0. The Broncos we not able to respond all game.
The Lions closed out the series up 2-1 over Santa Clara.
LMU had 12 total hits, while the Broncos only had one. Moreno went 3-4 at the plate, while Grumbo went 2-3.
Dedrick led the team in RBIs with three, while Moreno and Martinez had two each. Grumbo, Moreno and DeBord all led in putouts, with four a piece.
Vitalich (8-7) pitched a complete game and allowed only one hit and zero runs. She had two strikeouts.
The Lions will continue conference play and will have their conference opener next week against San Diego on Saturday and Sunday.
