Lions Close Out 2020-21 Season After Strong WCC Tournament Run

LAS VEGAS – The Loyola Marymount University women's basketball team concluded its 2020-21 season in the quarterfinals at the West Coast Conference Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., as the team won two straight games, but then fell to Santa Clara 83-68 on Saturday.

"Though it's always hard to lose, I can't be anything but proud of this team and how they fought and competed in very challenging circumstance over the course of this season," said head coach. Charity Elliott. "We have grown, matured and developed such incredible chemistry as a group and no doubt, we will be back even stronger next year."

This was the first time since 2003 that the Lions won two straight games at the WCC Championships. Despite Saturday's loss, the Lions made their mark at the tournament, as senior Chelsey Gipson tied for the tournament record in three-pointers made with eight. The last time someone made eight threes was in 2002. Gipson holds the record with a player from Santa Clara.

Khari Clark set her career high on Thursday, and then broke it on Saturday with 22 points. The Lions also had their highest scoring game of the season against Pepperdine with 85, while also having a short bench, as the team only had eight eligible players.

The Lions battled through the game, but the Broncos maintained momentum, as SCU held a double-digit lead for most of the second, third and fourth quarters.

Clark had another dominating game, as she led the team in points with 16, in rebounds alongside Jasmine Jones with seven each, in blocks with two and in steals with four.

Gipson and Ariel Johnson were right behind Clark in points with 15 and 13, respectively. Gipson, Jones and CiCi Ellington all led in assists with two each.

The Lions tallied up 29 total rebounds, eight total assists, four blocks and nine steals.

LMU closes out its season with a 7-19 record, while going 4-13 in conference play. The Lions will return everyone on this season's roster, including seniors, Meghan Mandel, Jones and Gipson.
