FULLERTON, Calif., -- The Loyola Marymount University softball team split on its first day of the Judi Garman Classic, as the team beat San Jose State in its first game with a 3-0 shutout, and then fell 3-1 in the second game of the day.

Andrea Gonzalez set the tone in the first at bat in the bottom of the second, as she hit a homerun to put the Lions on the board.Â

Up 1-0, LMU kept its momentum up in the bottom of the third, as
Desiree Moreno hit a homerun, to give LMU a 2-0 lead over the Spartans.Â

Both teams went quietly until the bottom of the sixth, which started with a single from Gonzalez, who then stole second, and then stole third.
Allisha Martinez singled to left field to send Gonzalez home.Â
Â
Up 3-0, the Spartans were not able to answer back, giving the Lions their third shutout of the season.Â

LMU had nine total hits, compared to SJSU's one. Gonzalez went 2-2 at the plate, while
Amanda Treatch and
Desiree Moreno went 2-3. Moreno, Gonzalez and Martinez had one RBI each.Â

Marina Vitalch picked up her fourth win of the season and her third shutout. The law student pitched a complete game, allowing just one hit and collecting an impressive 12 strikeouts.Â

Up 1-0 on the day, LMU battled, but San Jose State came out on top, putting the first run on the board in the bottom of the second.Â

The Lions responded in the top of the third, starting with a single from
Taylor Keinath, who then advanced to second after a sacrifice bunt from
Molly Grumbo. Kenith then advanced on a wild pitch, and then scored after Moreno singled, tying things up at 1-1.

The Spartans scored in the bottom of the fourth and fifth to take a 3-1 lead and to win the game.Â

The Lions had eight total hits, while the Spartans had seven. Keinath went 2-3 at the plate, while Treatch and Moreno went 2-4 and
Morgan DeBord went 1-2.Â

Paulina Johnson pitched 3.2 innings, allowing four hits and two runs.
Alessandra Samperio pitched 2.1 innings, allowing three hits and one run.Â

The Lions will be back in action on Saturday starting at 12:30 PM to take on Fresno State. This will be the second time and third meeting this season that the Lions have met with the Bulldogs.Â

LMU beat the Bulldogs at Smith field twice in the Lions' opening weekend, with a 4-2 and 2-0 win. Fresno State is 6-5 on the season.Â
