FULLERTON, Calif., -- The Loyola Marymount University softball team fell in its game on the second day of the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif., as the team fell to Fresno State 10-2 on Saturday.
The Lions opened up the game on a strong note, opening up the top of the first with a run.
Megan Dedrick got to first base after being hit by the pitch, and then advanced to second after
Desiree Moreno singled to right field. Dedrick then advanced to third after
Peyton Angulo reached first on an error, and then made it home when
Molly Grumbo singled.
Fresno State responded, as the team added a run in the bottom of the first and the second. The Bulldogs then picked up the momentum, scoring five runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-1 lead.
Grumbo was able to add one more run for the Lions after she hit a double, and then scored after
Andrea Gonzalez doubled.
Down 6-2, the Bulldogs scored three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 10-2 lead. The teams closed out the game in the bottom of the sixth, due to a run rule.
The Lions had five total hits, compared to the Bulldog's 12. Grumbo went 2-3 at the plate, while
Taylor Keinath went 1-2.
Marina Vitalch pitched 3.2 innings, allowing eight hits and seven runs.
Paulina Johnson came in to pitch 1.2 innings, allowing four hits and three runs and picked up the loss.
The Lions will be back in action on Sunday to take on Cal State Fullerton. This will be the Lions third meeting with the Titans. LMU is 0-2 on the season against the Titans, as they lost their first game 7-5, 5-2.
The Titans are 11-10 on the season and have gone 2-2 at the Judi Garman Classic, with their two losses being against Fresno State, and their two wins being against San Jose State.
First pitch will be at noon in Fullerton, Calif. This will conclude the Lions' weekend.
