SAN DIEGO – The LMU women's water polo team (1-2, 1-2 GCC) kept close to San Diego State (3-12, 2-1 GCC) on Saturday before the Aztecs were able to pull away for the 11-4 win.
The Lions opened the game with a goal as
Alena Sanchez scored with 5:12 on the clock in the opening quarter. SDSU answered with two goals in the period to take the 2-1 lead.
Melyssa Moore tied the score just over a minute into the second quarter, but the Aztecs closed the period with three-consecutive to take a 5-2 lead into the half.
For the third-straight period, LMU scored the first goal of the quarter.
Ryan-Marie Ickes cut into San Diego State's lead at the 5:27 mark. After SDSU responded with a goal of their own, Sancez scored her second of the day, with 35 seconds on the clock, to make it a 6-4 game heading into the final quarter.
San Diego State scored all five of the fourth quarter goals to secure the win.
Elizabeth Bradley made 10 saves as LMU's goalkeeper.
The Lions will have two opportunities to pick up conference wins next Saturday as LMU hosts both Concordia and Santa Clara at Burns Recreation Center.
