Home-Opening Excitement Pushes LMU to Overtime Win

LOS ANGELES - The LMU women's water polo team (1-1, 1-1 GCC) pulled out an overtime win on Saturday in their home opener against California Baptist University (1-1, 1-1 GCC). The Lancers held a two-goal lead at one point, and LMU only led by as many as one goal, as the two teams battle through nine tied scores before the Lions earned the 11-10 victory.

Alena Sanchez put the Lions ahead to start the game just before the halfway mark of the first quarter. CBU then scored the next two to take their first lead of the game. Carolina Newton tied the score at 2-2 before Tara DeBrabander gave the lead back to LMU with 32 seconds left in the opening period. The Lancers tied the score with 15 seconds left at 3-all.

CBU opened the second period with a go-ahead goal before DeBrabander evened the game at 4-4. California Baptist added one more before the break to take a 5-4 lead at intermission.

Ryan-Marie Ickes tied the score at the 3:44 mark of the third quarter on a powerplay goal for the only score of the period.

Back-to-back goals to open the fourth by CBU gave the Lancers their largest lead of the game. Sanchez cut the deficit in half in the ensuing possession and evened the score with 3:15 on the clock with a converted penalty goal. The Lancers pushed ahead for a final time, 9-8, with 3:03 to play in regulation, before Taylor Enright scored the goal that forced overtime with 1:38 to play.

Risse Sanchez scored the only goal of the fifth period, giving LMU a lead once again.

CBU tied the score to open the second overtime session, but DeBraBander scored the game-winner with less than a minute to play.

Elizabeth Bradley played the first and fourth quarter, as well as the overtime periods in goal for the Lions. Brandley made seven saves in her 22 minutes as LMU's goalkeeper. Madison Davis played 16 minutes in goal for LMU, taking the second and third quarter duties. Davis recorded four saves and added an assist.
