LOS ANGELES – The Loyola Marymount University volleyball team upset No. 18 San Diego and snapped their 11-game win streak Saturday night in Gersten Pavilion, as the team beat the Toreros 3-2 after a neck and neck battle.

Aaron Mansfield. "Our players have been extremely committed to our process since January. We got to reap the rewards of that with hard work with a win against an undefeated San Diego team tonight because of the progress we are making."
The Lions opened up set one to a dominating start, as the team went on a 9-0 run to open the match. The Toreros fought back and went on an 8-0 run to take the lead. Tied at 20-20, USD took the lead and held onto it, taking set one 25-22.
Down 1-0, the Lions responded in set two. USD took the first lead up until 18-18, then LMU took the lead and held onto it for the remainder of the set, winning 25-22 to tie things up at 1-1.
The teams had a neck and neck third set, as there were six tied scores and two lead changes. After being tied at 19-19, USD scored three straight points to take the lead for the rest of the set, leaving set three with a 25-22 win.
Down 2-1, LMU took the lead in set four, and allowed the Toreros to tie it up twice, but never gave the lead back. Tied at 13-13, the. Lions went on a 6-0 run to take a comfortable lead, and win the set 25-21.
Tied at 2-2, the Toreros went on a 10-3 run to open set five. The Lions answered back and went on a 6-0 run to tie things up at 13-13. The Toreros scored a point, but the Lions then tied things up and a block from
Sierra Bartley and
Audrey Klemp gave the Lions the set five win and handed USD its first loss of the season.
Klemp led the Lions in kills with 21, while
Kari Geissberger had 17.
Emmelyn Walters led the team in total blocks with 13, four block solos and nine block assists, while Klemp had seven total blocks.
Mary Shroll led the team in digs with 21, while
Isabella Bareford had 56 of the Lions' 65 assists.
"It was a total team effort tonight and I'm so happy that our players proved to themselves that when we play to our standard and stick with it during tough times, we can compete with anyone," said Mansfield.
The Lions will be back on the court on Thursday March 18 to take on Pepperdine in Malibu, Calif., and will then take on the Waves at home on the 19
th.
