Lions Win Seesaw Finale Against Trojans

LOS ANGELES – Hosting their home opener in the series finale against USC, the Loyola Marymount University Lions won an exciting seesaw 11 inning battle 9-8 over the Trojans on Sunday afternoon.

Both teams traded barbs all afternoon but the Lions picked up their first win of the season when Kenny Oyama sent a shot to center field scoring Alex Marquez to give LMU the walk-off win.

The Lions bats were hot throughout the day and they posted a season-high 20 hits. The last time LMU knocked the ball around the yard that much was at Cal State Northridge on April 25, 2017.

The Lions were knocking on the door all series long against the Trojans, but were finally able to come through off Oyama's bat.

LMU put up runs in the first four innings and found themselves leading 7-6. The Lions gave up a run in both the fifth and six and trailed 8-7 heading into the bottom of the ninth.

The Lions, beneficiaries of five Trojan errors, but none bigger than the one committed in the ninth to give LMU the tying run. The Lions were down to their last out when Evan Leibl hit a grounder to short and it was bobbled away allowing Dylan Hirsch to score from third knotting the game up at eight apiece.

Owen Hackman picked up his first win of the year with a strong relief effort, posting 2 1/3 innings while striking out a pair. Hackman stymied the Trojans when he took the hill and was able to get out of a bases loaded jam in the tenth after getting a shallow pop up and a pair of strikeouts. His effort on the mound set the scene for the Lions dramatic victory.

The Lions retired the Trojans in the top of the eleventh and started the bottom half with a Liam Critchett single down the right field line. Critchett moved around the diamond off a sac bunt by Alex Lambeau and a Leibl single to right center bringing up Oyama. With the infield drawn in, Oyama sent a shot to center bringing in the run and the win for LMU.

LMU takes their momentum into the week when they travel to Jackie Robinson Stadium for a date against UCLA on Tuesday, February 23 at 5:00 p.m.
