Lions Fall to CSU Fullerton, Look Towards First Road Game

LOS ANGELES – Loyola Marymount University softball players Peyton Angulo and Molly Grumbo both scored homeruns in the Lions' double header against Cal State Fullerton on Thursday, but the Titans won both games, 7-5, 5-2. 
 
The Lions set the tone in the bottom of the first, as Molly Grumbo scored after she reached first on a fielding error, and advanced when Megan Dedrick was walked, then advanced to third on a wild pitch and then made it home from a single from Andrea Gonzalez
 
The Titans responded in the top of the third with three runs, and then another in the fifth, to take a 4-2 lead over the Lions. 
 
LMU tied things up in the bottom of the sixth, starting with a walk from Gonzalez, who then advanced after Morgan DeBord reached first on a fielding error. The two both advanced when Madalie Gomez was walked. With bases loaded, Megan Martin grounded out, sending Gonzalez home. DeBord then scored after Amanda Treatch grounded out to tie things up at 4-4.
 
The Titans responded with three runs in the top of the seventh. Peyton Angulo answered back and hit a homerun in the bottom of the seventh while Desiree Moreno was on first. The Lions weren't able to take their lead back, closing out the game down 7-5. 
 
The Lions had four total hits, while the Titans had seven. Angulo, Gonzalez, DeBord, Martin and Treatch all went 1-3 at the plate. 
 
Angulo, Gonzalez, DeBord, Martin and Treatch all collected one RBI each. Grumbo and Angulo led the team in putouts with five each. 
 
Marina Vitalich (2-2) pitched a complete game. She allowed 10 hits and seven runs.  
 
Down 1-0, the Titans were the first team to make noise in game two, as they put the first run on the board in the top on the second, and then another one in the third, and then the fifth. The Lions put two runs on the board in the bottom of the second, after Treatch singled up the left, and then Grumbo homered, collecting two RBIs.
 
The Titans added two more runs, to close out the game ahead of the Lions 5-2. 
 
The Lions had four total hits, compared to CSUF's nine. Grumbo went 2-3 at the plate and collected all of the team's RBIs. Angulo led in putouts with nine. 
 
Paulina Johnson (1-1) pitched 1.2 innings, allowing three hits and one run. Linnay Wilson pitched 4.0 innings, allowing four hits and three runs. Alessandra Samperio closed out the game, pitching 1.1 innings and allowing two hits and one run.
 
The Lions will head down the road to UCLA on Sunday to play their first road game of the season in a double-header against the Bruins.
