Lions Close Out First Road Game of the Season

LOS ANGELES – The Loyola Marymount University softball team completed its first road trip of the season on Sunday, as the team went up the road to take on No. 1 UCLA in a double-header. 
 
The Lions went quietly in the top of the first inning, while the Bruins put six runs on the board in the bottom of the first. UCLA then added five more runs to the board in the bottom of the fourth. 
 
The Lions made noise in the top of the fifth, as Lauryn Garcia was walked, followed by a walk from Moreno, and then a single from Megan Martin. Peyton Angulo grounded out the first base, which sent Garcia home to get the Lions on the board. 
 
The Lions and the Bruins closed out the game in the middle of the fifth inning, due to UCLA's 11-1 lead. 
 
The Lions had two total hits, compared to the Bruins' 10. Martin and Morgan DeBord both went 1-2 at the plate, while Angulo collected the Lions' one RBI. 
 
Linnay Wilson started off for the Lions and allowed five hits and six runs, picking up the loss. While Paulina Johnson pitched 4.0 innings, allowing five hits and five runs. 
 
Down 1-0 on the day, the Lions went into their second game against the Bruins. UCLA put the first run on the board in the bottom of the first. The Lions responded in the top of the second, starting with a double from Andrea Gonzalez. DeBord then grounded out, advancing Gonzalez to third. A sacrifice bunt from Riley Ehlen send Gonozalez home. 
 
The Bruins then to two runs on the board in the bottom of the second, the third inning, the fifth and the sixth, to close out the game with a 6-1 win over LMU. 
 
Desiree Moreno, DeBord and Gonzalez all went 1-3 at the plate, giving the Lions their three hits, compared to the Bruins' eight. 
 
Alessandra Samperio picked up the loss, as she pitched 2.2 innings and allowed five hits and four runs. Marina Vitalch pitched 3.1 innings and allowed three hits and two runs. 
 
The Lions will be back in action on February 27-28 to take on UC Riverside in a three-game series.
