LOS ANGELES – The Loyola Marymount University softball team will celebrate Black History Month in its double-header against Cal State Fullerton on Thursday afternoon on Smith Field.
"This country has begun to have open conversations that we have rarely challenged ourselves to have in the past," said head coach
Tairia Flowers. "We want to continue to shine a light on equality, justice and love. Our hope is that hearts and minds remain open beyond the pandemic, beyond one moment or event, and beyond Black History Month."
In recognition of Black History Month, the Lions will open Thursday's game with Lift Every Voice and Sing, the Black National Anthem.
The Lions will head into their Black History Month game coming off of a stellar weekend, as the team went 3-1 in their opening weekend, beating Cal Poly and Fresno State twice. LMU fell to a strong Oregon State team on Sunday.
Desiree Moreno had a phenomenal opening weekend, collecting six RBIs, two home runs and. hitting .333.
Marina Vitalich pitched 17.0 innings over the weekend and had 17 strikeouts and had collected a 1.65 ERA.
The Lions will play their first game against Cal State Fullerton at noon, and will play the next one at 2:30.
Last season, the Lions lost to the Titans 5-0 in Fullerton. The last time LMU took on CSUF at home was in 2019, where the Lions won the series 2-1. CSUF is 2-4 on the season and on a three game losing streak.
