Lions Close Out Opening Weekend Against Oregon State

LOS ANGELES – The Loyola Marymount University softball team (3-1) fell to Oregon State in its last game of its opening weekend. The Lions battled, but fell to the Beavers 5-1.

Both teams went quietly in the first inning, but then the Beavers made some noise in the top of the second, putting two runs on the board. Both teams then went scoreless until the Beavers scored three more runs in the top of the fifth, as back-to-back homeruns were hit, with the first one having someone on base.

The Lions responded in the bottom of the sixth when Andrea Gonzalez got on base after being walked. Peyton Angulo then hit a double, which sent Gonzalez home, putting the Lions on the board.

The Lions weren't able to take the game back, closing out the bottom of the seventh with a 5-1 loss, their first of the season.

The Lions had five total hits, compared to Oregon State's 10. Angulo went 2-3 at the plate, while Madalie Gomez went 1-1. Angulo earned the Lions' one RBI and had the only double. Desiree Moreno led the team in putouts with eight.

Marina Vitalich is now 2-1, as she pitched 2.0 innings, and allowed three hits, two runs and had two strikeouts. Paulina Johnson pitched 2.0 innings, allowing six hits and three runs. Linnay Wilson came in to close out the game, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing just one hit and zero runs. Wilson also had two strikeouts.

The Lions will be back on the field next week to host Cal State Fullerton.
