LOS ANGELES – The Loyola Marymount University softball team (3-0) swept Fresno State on Saturday, beating the Bulldogs in both games, 4
-2 and 2-0, behind
Desiree Moreno's four RBIs.
The Lions opened up game one against the Bulldogs with a slow start, as both teams went scoreless for the first three innings. The momentum changed in the bottom of the fourth starting when
Andrea Gonzalez walked, and then advanced to second after
Peyton Angulo hit a single. With two on base, Moreno hit a homerun, her second of the weekend, giving the Lions three runs, tallying up three RBIs for Moreno.
Up 3-0, Fresno State scored an unearned run in the top of the fifth, but then the Lions extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth. Moreno collected another RBI, as she was walked, which sent
Molly Grumbo home. Grumbo had been walked, and then a single from
Megan Dedrick and a fly out from Gonzalez sent her to third.
Up 4-1, the Bulldogs were able to add one more run in the top of the sixth, but they weren't able to keep up with the Lions, losing their first game 4-2.
The Lions had 10 total hits, compared to Fresno State's seven. Angulo went 3-3 at the plate, while Grumbo went 2-3 and
Morgan DeBord went 1-2. Moreno earned all four of the team's RBIs.
Paulina Johnson pitched 5.1 innings, and picked up her first win of the season, allowing five hits and two runs.
Alessandra Samperio came up with the save, pitching 1.2 innings, allowing just two hits and no runs.
Up 2-0 on the weekend and 1-0 on the day, the Lions carried their momentum over to their second game of the day. Grumbo was first up to bat and hit a double to left field, and then stole third and then scored on a throwing error, giving the Lions a 1-0 lead to close the bottom of the first inning.
The Bulldogs went scoreless in the top of the second, while the Lions continued their momentum when
Megan Martin hit a homerun, to give the Lions a 2-0 lead.
Neither of the teams scored for the rest of the game, giving the Lions a 2-0 shutout over Fresno State, and a sweep on the day.
The Lions had seven total hits, compared to the Bulldogs' three. Grumbo went 2-4 at the plate, while
Amanda Treatch went 1-2. Martin had the Lions' one RBI.
Marina Vitalich picked up her second win on the weekend, as she pitched a full 7.0 innings, allowed three hits, zero runs and had eight strikeouts.
The Lions will be back on the field on Sunday to host Oregon State in their last game of the weekend.
