Lions Set A Record Against BYU

LOS ANGELES – The Loyola Marymount University women's basketball team set a new record Thursday night against Brigham Young University, as the team shot 100 percent from the free-throw line, the first time since 2010.

Meghan Mandel scored her season high in points with 15, while Cassandra Gordon played her first home game as a Lion and scored eight points. The Lions went on a fourth quarter run, but it wasn't enough to beat the Cougars, as the team fell 71-57.

Mandel scored all of the team's points in the first quarter, while also having two blocks and two rebounds. The team left the first down 18-6. The Lions gained some momentum in the second quarter, scoring 13 points to close out the half down 33-19.

The Lions struggled through the third quarter, but dominated the fourth, opening up the quarter with a 17-2 run. LMU outscored the Cougars 28-11 in the fourth, but it wasn't enough to win the game, as the team dropped the game 71-57.

Mandel led the team in scoring with 15, while Chelsey Gipson and Ariel Johnson both had 10 points a piece. Clark and Mandel both led the team in rebounds with eight each. Natalia Klimek led in assists with five, while CiCi Ellington had four. Mandel had two blocks, while Gipson had two steals.

The Lions perfect free-throw percentage topped the Cougars 67 percent. LMU also out shot BYU from behind the arch, 44 to 43 percent. The Lions shot 34 percent from the field and had seven total steals, 14 total assists and 32 rebounds.

The Lions have only had a perfect free-throw percentage twice, with the last time being in 2010 against Pepperdine, and then in 1991 against Santa Clara.

The Lions will be back in action on Saturday to host University of San Diego.
