LOS ANGELES – The Loyola Marymount University volleyball team won its first match of the season in its home-opener in Gersten Pavilion Tuesday night against Saint Mary's College, as the Lions beat the Gaels 3-1 behind 13 kills a piece from
Audrey Klemp and
Kari Geissberger.
The Lions set the tone in set one, as they took an early lead. Saint Mary's was only able to take the lead once, but the Gaels and the Lions tied things up seven times. A 5-1 run gave the Lions the set win, 25-16.
The second set was neck and neck, as the teams tied things up 15 times and there were four lead changes. Tied at 23-23, the Gaels then had a kill and an attack error to close out the second set 25-23.
Tied at 1-1, LMU picked up its momentum in the third set. After three lead changes and tying the score up five times, a kill from Geissberger started a 9-2 run, giving the Lions a 25-17 win in set three.
Up 2-1, the Lions dominated set four, as the team went on a 10-1 run, and extended its lead to double digits later in the set. A service ace from Klemp, and then an error from the Gaels gave the Lions their first win of the season, 25-12.
Klemp and Geissberger led in kills with 13, while
Rose Booth had 10.
Isabella Bareford led the team in assists with 37, while Mary. Shroll led in digs with 15. Geissberger had three solo blocks and two block assists.
Meredith Teague led the team in service aces with five.
The Lions will be back on the court tomorrow to take on Saint Mary's for the second time at 3:00 PM in Gersten Pavilion.
