Elliott Picks Up 100th LMU Win in Victory Over Santa Clara

SANTA CRUZ, Calif., -- Head Coach Charity Elliott won her 100th game at Loyola Marymount University on Saturday night, as she led the team to a 66-57 victory over Santa Clara University in Santa Cruz, Calif.

Elliott's 100th win came with the help of Ariel Johnson, who scored 19 points, eight rebounds and had three assists. Johnson wasn't the only Lion to score in double-digits, as Chelsey Gipson scored 16 points and CiCi Ellington scored 13.

"I am really proud of this team and how they fought back and got the win," said Elliott.  "We are definitely still building our chemistry, but our effort and fight tonight got us the win."

The Lions victory over the Broncos came after a second half comeback, as the team was trailing SCU for the first and second quarter.

A first quarter 16-1 run from the Broncos got the Lions off to a slow start, but the team responded and narrowed SCU's lead after LMU went on an 11-2 run. The Lions closed out the first quarter down 22-15. The Lions continued to build their momentum in the second quarter and left the half down 32-26.

The first basket from the Lions in the third was a three-pointer from Johnson, which started a 9-0 run. The run ended with a layup from Johnson, which gave the Lions their first lead of the game. Santa Clara kept things neck and neck, but a jumper and a free-throw from Ellington gave the Lions a 42-41 lead to end the third.

The Broncos took their lead back in the fourth quarter, but it didn't last long, as the Lions responded, tying things up and taking the lead back. The Lions' last eight points came from free-throws, sealing a 66-57 win over Santa Clara.

Right behind Johnson in rebounds was Khari Clark, who pulled seven, while also leading in blocks with two.

Gipson and Nicole Rodriguez had five rebounds a piece. Ellington led the team in steals with four, while Natalia Klimek had three.

The Lions outscored the Broncos in every category. LMU went 42 percent from the field, 33 percent from behind the arch and 72 percent from the line, while the Broncos went 34 percent, 26 percent and 71 percent, respectively. The Lions had 20 points off of turnovers, 36 total rebounds, 15 total steals, four blocks and 12 total assists.

"Every night is going to be a battle in this conference and we just want to keep building and keep showing up ready to compete; we did that tonight," said Elliott.

The Lions will be back in action on Monday to take on University of San Francisco at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center. The Don's Saturday night game against Pepperdine was postponed. The Dons are 0-2 in conference play.
