Summer Camp Roster Invite MLB

Baseball

Former Lions Fletcher and Megill Earn MLB Summer Camp Invitations

Major League Baseball has announced the return to play plan with a 60-game regular season that will begin on July 23 and 24. Each team has named pools of up to 60 players that will compete for one of the 30 major-league roster spots each team is allowed. Former LMU baseball players David Fletcher and Trevor Megill have each been extended summer camp roster invitations.

Fletcher, the 26-year old versatile infielder/outfielder for the Los Angeles Angels, looks to make the club for his third big league season. After making his Major League debut in 2018, Fletcher played 154 games for the Halos in 2019, becoming a fan-favorite.

Prior to being drafted as a sophomore in 2015, Fletcher played two years at LMU. As a freshman in 2014, he earned Freshman All-American accolades from Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball and the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association, and garnered American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings second team All-West Region honors. The WCC Defensive Player of the Year in his inaugural season, he was also a first team All-WCC and WCC All-Freshman team selection before adding another first team All-WCC pick as a sophomore.

Over two years with the Lions, Fletcher hit .318 with 69 runs scored and 31 stolen bases while starting every game for the Lions at shortstop. As consistent a hitter as the Lions have ever had, he hit safely in 71 of his last 87 games overall, and also reached in 40 of his last 44 games, 65 of his last 70, and 77 of his last 83.

Originally a third-round draft pick for the San Diego Padres in 2015, Megill was selected in 2019's Rule 5 draft by the Chicago Cubs this past winter and received the summer camp invite this week from the Cubs. The 6-foot-8 Megill posted a 3.86 ERA and 1.40 WHIP in 39 relief appearances across three minor league levels in 2019. He finished the season at Triple-A, where he had a 4.47 ERA in 32 relief appearances.

Megill graduated from LMU in 2015 and was selected by the San Diego Padres in the seventh round of the 2015 MLB Draft. He was drafted in the third round of the 2014 MLB Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals despite not appearing in a game for the Lions that year. He graduated a semester early out of high school to attend LMU for the 2012 baseball season and garnered Honorable Mention All-WCC and All-Freshman Team recognition.

He left LMU with the fourth-best ERA in team history (3.40) and second-best opponent batting average (.234). Megill averaged 8.71 strikeouts per game, placing him fifth in LMU history upon his departure. He registered 19 quality starts in his career and tossed 6.0+ innings in 20 of his 34 career starts for the Lions.

MLB agreed to terms on June 23 to have each of their teams return to home parks by July 1. Following team trainings and a number of exhibition games, the season is scheduled to begin.
