Sam Johnston, the senior from Cross River, New York and team captain for the past two seasons of the Loyola Marymount University men's rowing team, is one of twenty soon-to-be graduates awarded with an LMU Presidential Citation.
The Presidential Citations recognize a select few graduating seniors for the high academic achievement, leadership and service to their school community. Recipients of the award are those who have displayed their commitment to the University's mission statement: The encouragement of learning, the education of the whole person, the service of faith and the promotion of justice.
Sam was chosen by the selection committee after being nominated for his GPA, essays he was asked to write and recommendations given on his behalf by professors and mentors. Upon learning of the award, Sam noted, "I would not be even remotely worthy of such a distinction had I not been shaped by such a remarkable team and program."
"It is no surprise that Sam achieved the Presidential Citation Award. It is because of people like Sam that these awards exist," said LMU head men's rowing coach
Julia Gamache. "Sam lives his belief in the MORE; doing and being more for himself and for others, and helping those around him be more as well. His teammates and I are more than proud of Sam."
Echoing Coach Gamache's sentiment, Director of Rowing
Karl Huhta added, "Every day for four years, Sam has embodied what it means to be a Lions Rower. Selfless, determined, caring, and full of love for others in his community, are only a fraction of the qualities that describe him. One of the best teammates I have ever seen, to say he is deserving of this award is an understatement. While we will miss him dearly, we are so proud of Sam and cannot wait to see what he accomplishes next."
