LA VERNE, Calif. – LMU women's water polo team (11-6) won all four games this weekend at the Claremont Convergence. After two wins on Friday, the Lions defeated Saint Francis, 10-4, and Concordia, 11-9.
GAME 1: #12 LMU 10, Saint Francis 4
Alexandria Akritidou and
Mei Vilanova pushed LMU ahead 2-0 to open the game, before SFU added one in the final minute of the period.
Saint Francis scored a penalty goal to tie the game with 6:30 to play in the second quarter.
Alena Sanchez gave the lead back to LMU with just over five minutes to play before the half, and Gerber added to the lead. After St. Francis added one more,
Kelsey Snelgar scored to make it a 5-3 LMU lead at intermission.
LMU scored all three goals of the third quarter as
Isabella Barajas scored twice and Snelgar added one more to close out the period.
Serena Zafiris and Akritidou added to the lead in the fourth to give LMU the 10-3 lead, before SFU scored to end the game at 10-4
Madison Davis made six saves and added two steals in goal for the Lions.
GAME 2: #12 LMU 11, Concordia 9
The Lions jumped ahead quickly with goals by
Kelsey Snelgar and
Alena Sanchez. Concordia added a goal late in the period with a converted penalty shot.
Ryan-Marie Ickes responded with a penalty goal of her own to make it a 3-1 lead. The Eagles added one late to close out the period.
Concordia tied the game with two goals to open the second period, but
Alexandra Akritidou scored a penalty in the final minute to give LMU the halftime lead, 4-3.
Abbey Grosse began the second half with an opening-possession goal before Concordia scored on their ensuing possession.
Alena Sanchez pushed the lead to two goals before Concordia earned it right back. Snelgar added another converted penalty, but CUI continued the back-and-forth scoring with a response.
Isabella Barajas and Grosse pushed the LMU lead to 9-6, before the Eagles scored in the final eight seconds to setup a two-goal game heading into the final period.
After Barajas opened the fourth quarter with a goal to extend the lead to three, Concordia scored on consecutive possessions to make it a 10-9 game with 2:23 to play.
Yanah Gerber scored the insurance goal in the final 34 seconds to secure the win.
Tara DeBrabander made five saves and added two steals as LMU's goalie.
