IRVINE, Calif. – LMU women's water polo (8-6) earned its second win in as many days over a higher-ranked team to close out the 2020 Barbara Kalbus Invitational. The #16 Lions used overtime to defeat #13 San Jose State in the 11
th-place game, 13-10.
Isabella Barajas opened the scoring with a powerplay goal just over a minute into the game. After the Spartans tied the score,
Melyssa Moore gave the lead back to LMU with 5:16 remaining in the quarter. San Jose State closed out the period with two goals to take a 3-2 lead.
Kelsey Snelgar opened the second quarter with an equalizer. She did the same two minutes later to even the game at 4-all with 5:08 remaining in the half. Once SJSU retook their goal advantage,
Yanah Gerber scored the final of the half with 15 seconds on the clock to make it an even score, 5-5.
The Spartans came out of the half with an opening minute goal, but Snelgar responded with consecutive goals to five the lead to LMU, 7-6. Barajas pushed LMU ahead 8-7, but two San Jose State goals in the final two minutes gave the lead back to the Spartans entering the fourth quarter.
Barajas scored the equalizer on another powerplay at the 5:59 mark of the fourth.
Yanah Gerber put the Lions on top with 2:01 on the clock. LMU held the lead until three seconds remaining when SJSU scored to send the game into overtime.
Scoring her fifth and sixth goals of the game, Snelgar gave the Lions a two-goal cushion in the fifth period. Snelgar's final goal was scored with no time remaining in the first overtime.
Moore scored the game's final goal with 44 seconds remaining in the sixth period, pushing LMU to victory.
Playing all 38 minutes in the cage for LMU,
Elizabeth Bradley recorded 13 saves.
The Claremont Convergence is next for the Lions, which will take place on March 6-7.
