LOS ANGELES – The Loyola Marymount University softball team swept on its first day of the LMU Tournament, as the Lions picked up a 3-2 win over Sacramento State in a walk-off, and then beat Quinnipiac University 5-1.
The Lions had the first game of the weekend Friday morning against Sacramento State, which they used to set the tone for the day.
Sacramento State scored two runs in the top of the second, while the Lions went scoreless until the bottom of the sixth.
Down 2-0 the Lions responded, starting with a single up the middle from
Desiree Moreno.
Page Mindedahl came in to pinch run, and then advanced all the way home after
Andrea Gonzalez hit the ball over the fence, earning two RBIs.
Tied at 2-2, Grumbo singled through the left side, and then advanced to second after Morgan Debord singled. Grumbo advanced on a fly out from Angulo, and then scored after Gonzalez singled, winning the game in a 3-2 walk off.
Grumbo went 3-3 at the plate, while
Andrea Gonzalez went 2-4. The Lions had nine total hits, compared to Sacramento State's five.
Mallory Eckroth pitched 6.0 innings, while
Linnay Wilson (2-3) pitched 1.0. Wilson picked up the win after having zero hits, zero runs and one strikeout. Eckroth had five hits, two runs and two strikeouts.
Up 1-0 on the day, the Lions played back to back games, taking on Quinnipiac in the second game of the day.
Both teams went scoreless until the Bobcats put the first run on the board in the top of the fourth. The Lions responded in the bottom of the fifth with three runs.
Grumbo opened the bottom of the fifth with a triple and then made it home after Gonzalez singled.
Kat Hummer sent Gonzalez to third after hitting a single to the right side.
Megan Dedrick bunted, collecting an RBI after Gonzalez scored. Hummer gave the Lions their third run after
Megan Martin Singled.
The Lions continued their momentum in the bottom of the sixth, as Grumbo singled, and then stole second. Gonzalez collected another RBI after doubling to right center. Gonzalez then scored after Moreno doubled, closing out the game up 5-1.
Grumbo went 2-3 at the plate, while Gonzalez went 2-4. The Lions had 11 total hits, while the Bobcats had one.
Brittany Steenbergen pitched 3.0 innings and had zero hits and one run, while Wilson picked up her third win of the season after pitching 4.0 runs.
Up next: The Lions will continue day two of the LMU Tournament, as the team will take on Quinnipiac at 12:30, and University of Delaware at 2:45 PM.
